Just a bad night. Then the bans.

A member of my team watched a Brazilian league game live and called it fishy. The expert he asked called it a bad night.

On 20 November 2025, Botafogo played Rio Claro in Brazil's top basketball league, the NBB. A member of my team was watching it live. He has followed the NBB for five or six years. During the game he messaged a well-known Brazilian basketball journalist.

Direct messages sent during the game: something really weird going on in this Rio Claro game, the first fishy game in five or six years, Rio Claro not trying to get shots up, best players on the bench, every possession a 24-second shot clock violation, 5 points against Botafogo in 8 minutes. The reply: just a terrible game of terrible decisions.
His messages during the game, dated 21 November 2025 by his own clock. The journalist's name and photo removed.

"Rio Claro does not even try to get shots up," he wrote. The best players were on the bench, and possession after possession ended in a 24-second shot clock violation. "They have 5 points against Botafogo in 8 minutes."

The reply: "Just a terrible game of terrible decisions."

What the numbers say

Rio Claro led after the first quarter, 23–19. In the second quarter they scored 7 points. Botafogo won 74–61, a total of 135 points. The league's match report ↗

The betting-integrity monitors saw it the same way he did. Their reports, quoted in the Brazilian press in December, called the evidence on this game "clear and overwhelming": bettors knew the total would stay under 160 points. The league says it heard about the suspicions the next day, 21 November, and passed them to the Federal Police, the government, the Brazilian federation and FIBA. BNLData's report ↗

Rio Claro had come back that year after two years away, funded by a foreign investor. After the investigation started, the club cut ties with him and with everyone he had brought in.

Then the bans

From May 2026, six Brazilian players were suspended from all basketball, for between two and fifteen months, for betting on basketball competitions. Five of them were on Rio Claro's roster that season. FIBA's list of sanctions ↗

In October 2026 it came out that FIBA had provisionally suspended an American who played in that game for Rio Claro, while its case against him runs. His new club in Chile let him go within hours. La Tercera ↗

None of this is a court verdict. The suspensions are for betting, not for fixing a game, FIBA's case against the American is still open, and the police investigation isn't finished. I don't name the players here; the suspensions are on FIBA's public list.

Why a bettor saw it first

He wasn't even watching the odds much. He was watching the court, the way someone does who has seen thousands of games with real money on them. When a team stops shooting, the best players sit and the shot clock runs out again and again, you don't need a ruling to know something is wrong.

The journalist wasn't wrong to be careful. Calling a game fixed in public, on a hunch, is serious. But "a bad night" is also what everyone around the game wants to hear.

Fixers don't need the experts to be fooled for long. They need one night.
